Statement of Support for CHIP-2025-03: Faster Blocks for Bitcoin Cash

5-minute read

Paytaca supports CHIP-2025-03, Faster Blocks for Bitcoin Cash, proposed by Bitcoin Cash developer BitcoinCashAutist (BCA). The proposal would reduce Bitcoin Cash’s target block interval from the current 10 minutes to 1 minute, together with the protocol changes necessary to make that transition safely.

The full proposal and its ongoing development can be found here:

As a company building payment infrastructure, wallets, merchant tools, smart-contract applications, and other products on Bitcoin Cash, we believe faster blocks would be a meaningful improvement to BCH as a practical payments and smart-contract platform.

Bitcoin Cash already provides an excellent experience for ordinary payments through 0-conf. But not every application can safely or practically rely on 0-conf. Some transactions need confirmation, and this becomes increasingly important as the BCH ecosystem expands beyond straightforward payments into DEXs, lending, escrow, covenants, and other smart-contract applications.

Today, falling back from 0-conf to a blockchain confirmation means waiting for a block with a 10-minute target interval—and sometimes considerably longer. With 1-minute blocks, that fallback becomes much less disruptive.

Faster blocks would also give applications much finer control over the trade-off between confirmation latency and the amount of confirmation security they require. Instead of security arriving in large 10-minute increments, applications could choose 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, or more confirmations according to their own risk requirements.

An important concern with reducing the block interval is security. A 1-minute block necessarily represents less accumulated proof of work than a 10-minute block. However, this does not translate into a corresponding reduction in security against minority-hash double-spend attacks.

Under the standard Nakamoto security model, at the same confirmation depth, the probability of reversal by a minority attacker depends on the attacker’s share of hashpower and the number of confirmations, not on whether the target block interval is 1 minute or 10 minutes. In fact, multiple 1-minute confirmations can provide substantially greater protection against a minority attacker while still arriving much sooner than a single 10-minute confirmation.

This gives BCH something valuable: finer confirmation granularity without sacrificing the minority-attack security of a given confirmation depth.

For users, that means shorter and more predictable waits when confirmation is necessary. For wallets and merchants, it means faster fallback when 0-conf is not appropriate. For exchanges and other services, it means much finer control over confirmation policies. And for DeFi and smart-contract applications, it means state changes, retries, settlements, and recovery from transaction conflicts can happen on a much shorter timescale.

From Paytaca’s perspective, this moves Bitcoin Cash in the right direction.

Our goal is to make Bitcoin Cash useful not merely as an asset that people hold, but as money and financial infrastructure that people, businesses, applications, and eventually autonomous agents can use every day. That requires scalability, low fees, reliable transactions, and increasingly, a faster feedback loop between transactions and confirmed blockchain state.

We believe 1-minute blocks would make Bitcoin Cash significantly better for the applications being built today and open additional possibilities for what can be built tomorrow.
